Living with Osteoporosis
When a person has osteoporosis, their bones lose calcium and other minerals, which makes them more brittle and prone to shattering (breaking).
Because the hormonal changes associated with menopause exacerbate bone loss, women are more likely to have osteoporosis. In Australia, one-third of men and about half of all women over 60 have osteoporosis.
Regular exercise lowers the rate of bone loss and preserves bone tissue, reducing the likelihood of fractures.
The right types of exercises help to strengthen the muscles, which helps to improve balance and reduce the risk of falling.
Our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists will work with you to create a treatment plan, workout routine, and activity schedule that is specific to your requirements.
If you would like to start the journey and book an appointment with one of our Allied Health team, contact us at 08 7089 6666.
What Exercise Is Good For Osteoporosis?
Before beginning any exercise program, it is important to consult with your doctor or health care professional. There are many things that need to be considered such as:
- Age
- Severity of Osteoporosis
- Current fitness levels and ability
- Medications you are taking
- Other medical diseases such cardiovascular or lung disease, arthritis, or neurological issues
- Goal of your exercise program – is it to improve bone density or prevent falls?
People with Osteoporosis should consider the following types of exercise:
- Weight bearing exercises
- Muscle strengthening exercise
- Balance exercise
- Flexibility exercise
Hydrotherapy is an excellent therapy for people with Osteoporosis both pre and post-fracture. The water offers a safe environment to exercise which aids balance and fall prevention which enables us to do resistance, cardio, and balance training.
